Richard Lewis

Richard Lewis Biography:

Richard Lewis, Chief Operating Officer
The Warehouse Limited

“I arrived with my wife and our three children, from the UK in late 2004. I was originally motivated to explore opportunities to work in New Zealand due to the culture, climate and friendliness of the people as well as the change of pace in lifestyle.

Prior to joining The Warehouse Limited, I held senior roles in the UK, most recently as Head of Operations for non-food at Sainsbury’s, accountable for over £4 billion of turnover across general merchandise, clothing, health and beauty, pharmacy and petrol.

The Warehouse provided the level of challenge and job fit I was looking for, working in operations, with further opportunity for development. The business operates across a broad range of categories providing huge potential for growth. I was also attracted by the strength of The Warehouse brand and the history and success of the business.

I haven't looked back. I have been able to apply my experience from day one at The Warehouse. The team are keen to embrace and apply new ideas and learn from what other retailers are doing overseas.

In addition, I have the opportunity to spend time outside of work indulging my passion for sport and spending more time with family and friends, cooking and eating out. While the pace of work is similar to the UK the culture has suited my work hard, play hard philosophy.”

You are more than likely listening to this because you are interested in the prospect of living and working in New Zealand and are hopefully considering the Warehouse as a possible employer. I thought it would be helpful if I recorded this blog to share my experiences with you which I hope in some way you will find useful.

Change comes to all of us at times during our lives; we all strive to improve our situation and quality of life such as changing jobs or changing home. Every so often we come to a crossroads on our journey and decide whether to continue down the same path or go down a different road, for example, when we weigh up if the job that we are doing is enjoyable and challenging or the Company we are working for is giving us the development and career progression that we want and deserve.

I had come to the decision that I was not going to get everything that I wanted from the Company I was working for in the UK and that it was time for a change. It was also at this point that I took a real look at what the next ten years looked like for me and my family. I had for several years been unhappy with the way the UK was changing, crime was rising and safety and security was eroding. Being the dad of two young children, I really worried about the future and the ability to keep them safe. I also found that society was changing and becoming much more withdrawn and that public services were stretched with the changes in European borders and immigration control or the lack of it.

I wanted and needed to change. The biggest worry I had was that I was spending all this time working really hard and my kids were growing up without me in an environment that wasn’t giving them a real quality of life.

One of the reasons I wanted to join The Warehouse was the sign on the front door I noticed when I came in for an interview that said "Through these doors walk New Zealand's finest employees."

Before I joined The Warehouse, I read an article that talked about the contribution the company made to the community, the annual Conference it ran for team members and how the company gave team members a day off for their birthday. It convinced me.
